  Today I want to share the surfaces I prefer to work on and how I prepare.  I love to work on canvas board. If you are experimenting a lot, these are inexpensive and easy to prepare because they are already primed. Stretched canvas can be costly so we can feel a little 'precious' about messing them up. Canvas boards can bend as the paint dries, so they need to be stored flat. I use canvas boards because the surface is perfect for the effect I want. They are firm to work on and can take fine detail. I like a textured surface for some paintings. Here's a video of how I get my textures, also on my website www.lindabirkinshawart.net  . I spread acrylic gesso over the board then press crinkled cellophane across the wet gesso. About painting, how to get started and inspiration.

  My first ever blog!  I want to share my love of painting and the outdoors and encourage anyone out there finding it hard to get started to get splashing the paint! Also, please look at my paintings on    www.lindabirkinshawart.net  where you will see some of my creations, but not see my struggles!  I've painted for as long as I can remember and it's a compulsion. I paint almost every day. But I know that it's sometimes hard to get started. A good question to ask is, what inspires you? For many years I have painted whatever people ask me to, illustrations, jigsaw designs, funny pictures. During lockdown I had a lot of time to myself and began to paint just for me! I'm inspired by walks with my dogs in our beautiful Yorkshire countryside and sometimes further afield.
